Constraints on the Space Density of Extragalactic HVCs
نویسنده
چکیده
High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) have recently attracted renewed attention as being long lived, massive dark matter dominated clouds of primordial composition distributed throughout the Local Group. In this picture the HVCs would contain a few ×10 M⊙ of H i and would be at distances of a few hundred kpc to 1.5 Mpc from the Local Group barycenter. If this extragalactic interpretation of HVCs is true, similar clouds are expected in other galaxy groups and around galaxies. We discuss the limits blind H i surveys and QSO absorption line studies put on this proposed population of clouds.

Highly Ionized High Velocity Clouds
We have recently used the Hubble Space Telescope to study a pair of high velocity clouds in the direction of Mrk 509 that have unusual ionization properties. They exhibit strong C iv absorption with little or no low ion absorption or H i 21 cm emission. As the closest known analog to the outer diffuse halos of damped Lyα absorbers and the low N(H i) metal line absorption systems seen in the spe...
متن کاملLocal Group HVCs: Status of the Evidence
The evidence for locating the High Velocity Clouds in the Local Group is summarized and evaluated. Recent measurements of the Hα surface brightness and metallicity of a number of HVCs appear to be fatal to the Galactic fountain as a significant contributor to the HVC phenomenon, but not to the existence of the fountain itself. Observations of extragalactic analogues to HVCs remain the sine qua ...
متن کاملHighly Ionized High Velocity Clouds: Intergalactic Gas in the Local Group or Distant Gas in the Galactic Halo?
In the course of our studies of the gaseous halo surrounding the Milky Way, we have recently identified several high velocity (VLSR < -100 km s ) clouds in the directions of Mrk 509 and PKS 2155-304 that have unusual ionization properties. The clouds exhibit strong C IV absorption with little or no detectable low ion (C II, Si II) absorption or H I 21 cm emission down to very sensitive levels. ...
متن کاملHigh-velocity Clouds and the Local Group
I examine some of the evidence relevant to the idea that high-velocity clouds (HVCs) are gas clouds distributed throughout the Local Group, as proposed by Blitz et al. (1999) and Braun & Burton (1999). This model makes several predictions: a) the clouds have low metallicities; b) there should be no detectable Hα emission; c) analogues near other galaxies should exist; and d) many faint HVCs in ...
متن کاملHigh–Velocity Clouds: Building Blocks of the Local Group
We suggest that the high–velocity clouds (HVCs) are large clouds, with typical diameters of 25 kpc and containing 5×107 solar masses of neutral gas and 3×108 solar masses of dark matter, falling onto the Local Group; altogether the HVCs contain 10 solar masses of neutral gas. Our reexamination of the Local–Group hypothesis for the HVCs connects their properties to the hierarchical structure for...
